[book-review] Kimberly Duffy - Tapestry of Light

So this post is not only a review but also my participation in my first booktour with @lovebooktours on Twitter/Instagram. Thanks for the ARC and all your effort.

Also I've a confession to make. It's past midnight - so officially my date of the booktour - and I didn't finish the book. Not because it wasn't good but because of bloody life. (Work was a pain in the ass lately and I worked so much overtime and weekends I barely managed to finish my copy of Ace of Spades.)

So this post is not like the other's but different.

"Death is inevitable and common. [...] There is no pretense in it. Not in birth either. There's no reason to hide grief or joy."

First of all the official synopsis this time:

Calcutta, 1886. Ottilie Russell is adrift between two cultures, British and Indian, belonging to both and neither. To support her little brother, Thaddeus, and her grandmother, she relies upon her skills in beetle-wing embroidery that have been passed down to her through generations of Indian women. When a stranger appears with the news that Thaddeus is now Baron Sunderson and must travel to England to take his place as a nobleman, Ottilie is shattered by the secrets that come to light. Despite her growing friendship with Everett Scott, friend to Ottilie’s English grandmother and aunt, she refuses to give up her brother. Then tragedy strikes, and she is forced to make a decision that will take Thaddeus far from death and herself far from home. But betrayal and loss lurk in England, too, and soon Ottilie must fight to ensure Thaddeus doesn’t forget who he is, as well as find a way to stitch a place for herself in this foreign land.

Intriguing, isn't it? That's exactly what captured me and I have to admit I can't say no to a brilliant historical novel.

I absolutely love Ottilie! Strong young woman who sacrifices so much and doing what's necessary to keep her loved ones alive and well. Her story - as far as I've gotten - is absolutely amazing. Her faith incredibly and also the way how she finds herself is wonderful.

Damaris - you just got to love her! I mean how can you not? I absolutely adored that she's friends with Ottilie despite their heritage and gap in society and supports her - even if it's just with getting a gown her friend has to embroider. Her strong way and the fact that she doesn't give a damn about cultural differences is just amiable.

The book made me mostly sad - from the first page - and angry. It also made we want to see 19th Century India. The descriptions we're handed by Kimberly Duffy are wonderful, rich and make your imagination wander. I love a book with good descriptions so that you can really see the world before your eyes and Tapestry of  Light had it all!

Also the cover! Beautiful artwork that fitted the theme of Ottilie's job perfectly and made me admire the cover so often when I thought about her embroidery and hard work.

I can't tell you guys much more - and won't for the spoilers I might provide - but I can tell you one thing. I'll definitely finish this book and I will update this post then and you should definitely read it!

That's it, really. GO READ THIS BOOK!
