[book-review] Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé - Ace of Spades

Image
1st June 2021 was the day! The day this masterpiece  (and I really can't think of another word for it) was finally released into the world. First let me give you the official synopsis...  When two Niveus Private Academy students, Devon Richards and Chiamaka Adebayo, are selected to be part of the elite school’s senior class prefects, it looks like their year is off to an amazing start. After all, not only does it look great on college applications, but it officially puts each of them in the running for valedictorian, too. Shortly after the announcement is made, though, someone who goes by Aces begins using anonymous text messages to reveal secrets about the two of them that turn their lives upside down and threaten every aspect of their carefully planned futures. As Aces shows no sign of stopping, what seemed like a sick prank quickly turns into a dangerous game, with all the cards stacked against them. Can Devon and Chiamaka stop Aces before things become incredibly deadly? L...

The Future of this Blog

Hello!  As you guys can see, I've started updating more regularly. But not with personal stuff but with book reviews. I always loved reading so I'll keep this up. So from now on this will be a blog for book reviews, movie reviews and updates on my writing if I got any. I'll also change the name of the blog and I do hope you'll still keep me company on my journey through different bookish worlds.  If you love reading, feel free to suggest me books and say hello on my Book-Twitter account @TBookcorner Next update will be hopefully up soon!

2020 - An Unexpected Year

Image
Hello folks! I know it's been way too long since my last post on here. But I wasn't really in the mood for blogging and had not the right words. I hope you all are doing well this year that's obviously a bloody mess. I mean 2020 should have been the year of the roaring 20s with lots of fun, achievements, changes, a better year. But instead it got worse. We've a global pandemic due to Covid-19, thousands of death, political chaos, lockdowns, Brexit, police brutality and murders, #BlackLivesMatter protests, still not enough equality for Trans-People or the LGBTQ+ community... As I said a complete mess. I had lot's of plans at the beginning of the year, but now it's just work that went on like normal even in the lockdown phase we had here in Germany. Since our company is delivering food, we had a huge chaos and then a huge gab in the deliveries.  My job sucks like usual, I've got more and more work. Was out of a job in hospital for a few weeks since my job ...

How To Read More

Image
A question I've been asking myself for quite some time after I nearly quit reading for a few years. I had barely any time with work and somehow every book I picked up it didn't feel good enough to finish. It was me though, not the books. *laughs*  I was completely hooked again a few months ago after starting Gabriel's Inferno by Sylvain Reynard. A romantic novel I'll hopefully post a review on here soon so no spoilers for now. Anyway I was back to my "book eating". I finished a book a day and was so happy to be back to reading more again. One question is remaining though.  How can I read more?    Well being sick for the third week in a row due to my back, I had a lot of time reading. I finished some books I had started ages ago. I'm trying to get a routine again and get a balance between reading and writing again. So here are my strategies I'm trying to use to read more these days. 1) TBR-pile One thing I hear every time in the book community is the w...

[review] Bad Boys For Life

Image
My most anticipated movie this month and I already loved the trailer so I was quite excited to see it on Valentines Day after Parasite. There one simple thing to say it: I absolutely loved it! I was quite happy to see the boys back in action, being all funny and sassy and having also a few ups and downs. Bad Boys, Bad Boys Watcha Gonna Do, Watcha Gonna Do When They Come For You We had the beloved Bad Boys Theme with a shot over Miami and the water and a car chase in the beginning. You can see Mike and Marcus driving in his Porsche through the city, followed by some cops with sirens following them. It's quite funny and so familiar when Marcus freaks out while Mike is driving and Mike is just all sassy. I loved it. The a big reveal, Marcus is a granddaddy now! Awww cuties. Mike, the Captain and all the others are celebrating in a bar and after, Marcus tells him he want's to retire for good. Mike challenges him to a race and the one who wins the run, decides what wi...

[review] Parasite

Image
On Friday, yes Valentines Day, I decided to have a long movie night with two movies. First one was Parasite. I was curious what all this fuss was about and I had no clue what I would watch because I have never seen any trailer or heard anything about it before the Oscars. So I decided to give it a try and find out for myself what it was about and if it deserved an Oscar for Best Movie in my opinion. I can tell you one thing. I understand the fuss about it and it was a brilliant movie. Totally deserved an Oscar for sure. Like usual I'm trying to do this as spoiler free as possible. First of all, I was prepared to read subtitles for the next 132 minutes but it actually was dubbed in German. So it was quite nice to fully concentrate on the cinematography and the movie itself. It started with getting to know the family Kim who's poor and living in a basement flat. One night a friend of the young son shows up and asks him to teach a young girl from a rich family - the Parks -...

[review] Knives Out

Image
So last weekend I finally started to use my 30-day-cinema-ticket I got and started the upcoming movie-marathon with "Knives Out". A movie I wanted to watch since the trailer for some reasons. The cast, Chris Evans, the story, James Bond, Chris Evans. ^^ So here's my review of the movie and I'm trying to do this as spoiler-free as possible. It first of all is a crime movie and I'm really into these thb. Well the trailer looked interesting, also the cast is amazing. So I called a friend and we headed to a late night viewing. She later said "I would have never watched this movie without you dragging me into it, but I absolutely loved it." So I guess that's saying something. The movie started with a rich novelist - Harlan Thrombey - found dead in his rooms, cut throat and nothing suspects a murder. So the police just asks the family about what could make him do it on the night of his 85th birthday party. With the police arrives a private detect...

Writing #3 - Did she do it?

Image
Hello to another post about the subject writing! I had two posts about it before and I quite like to write about this theme, so here it is... The title "Did she do it?" refers to the things I wrote in my last posts about this. I haven't postet anything of my writing yet. A question you probably had after reading them "When will she post something?", "Did she post anything yet?" In fact I did. Quite a few things actually. I finally had the courage and since there where none of the horrible reviews I was so afraid of, I decided it was a good idea to finally take the step. I was quite anxious the first few days. Would people even read it? Would they comment how bad it was? Would they say it was crappy and I should quit? Fortunately they didn't. And after posting my first big work "Picking Up The Pieces" I even got good reviews and people wanted another chapter and another. It made me happy. I finally had done it and it went quite we...

2020 - Update

Image
Hello guys! It's been quite a while since my last blog post (over a year, holy molly and I'm so soorryyy!!!!!). I thought about blogging a while ago but never had the inspiration to do it. But I guess that it was time for a small update and here it finally is.  2019 was a brilliant year somehow. Had lots of fun on concerts and with my friends on the road, work was not too good but more of that later. Also my progress in writing was pretty good. If you're interested, here's a link to my AO3 page .  So work... Bad news first. No I didn't quit, not yet at least, I just got stabbed in the back by my bosses and transferred to another job after writing applications for different jobs in our company and got denied all of them. Now I'm my bosses boss "secretary" and the idiot of the whole firm. I still don't know what all my work will be but for now it's crappy. Mostly because - not of the work itself - but because no one feels responsible...

Happy New Year 2019!

Image
Happy New Year 2019! I'm quite looking forward to the new year. 2018 wasn't a bad year for me, it was quite good and successful, but I intent to make 2019 even better. 2018 was - as I mentioned - a good year. Stressful and full of work but good. I finished my training as freight forwarding agent in summer with quite a good score after months of studying and working. It was a very busy time but I also enjoyed it. I started a  job with a permanent working contract in the company that trained me. I helped out in a few departments and sadly I'm stuck in one I don't like at all at the moment. But I hope I can leave soon, so I keep going.  I intent to stop being stressed and work this much. I often did 10h a day and it was simple too much after a while. My resolution for work next year is to be good at my job, working for a promotion, get back into my old department and ignoring everybody's shit. I signed a second working contract for a few hours of work on Sat...

It's good to be back!

Hello guys! It's been a while since my last post. Sadly my laptop died and I just got it back yesterday. Edit: This was the beginning of the post when it died again!!! aaahhhh.... But now after a while it's back again and (for now) functioning. Well how are things? Good, definitely good... Finished my oral exam on the 5th July and are working as a fully trained freight forwarder since the 6th. I've lots of work and it does not get less. But that's a good thing in some ways, right? We had a few calm days lately but I'm already bored. *giggles* I can't stand when I've nothing to do. Won't have a big time off until October so I'm enjoying every weekend to the fullest or try to. Was at the Sting & Shaggy concert on Friday 13.07. and it was absolutely brilliant! There where so many wonderful classics from the both of them and some songs from their new album 44/876. If you wanna see a thread of pics and videos from this concert, click here ...

Life goes on...

Hello guys! I'm sorry I was away for so long but I simply had lots to do and work is kinda stressful atm and then I had no inspiration/ motivation to write a blog post. I'm sorry. Well, exams are done, I've my results and now I'm preparing for my oral exam in about a month. As I said work is kinda stressful atm because of all the official holidays we had this month. I work half time in another department and half in my own. I sometimes feel like I have to clone myself to get all the work done. I hope it'll be better in the upcoming week but I doubt it. Probably have to work on TUE (another official holiday here) too... Alone. And I'm worried that there will be some crap I have no clue how to handle. But well we'll see about that very soon.... Everything else here is fine, it's getting summer and very warm some days. It's beautiful but I prefer the rain due to my hay fever. My back is killing me again and I'm just working on pain killers ri...

Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is recognized as a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance and romantic love in many regions around the world, although it is not a public holiday in any country. Yup that's the official explanation from the English Wikipedia page.... Just let it sink in.... I think you know what I want to say, don't you? Yes! The word commercial is in this sentence... And every year I ask myself: Why is everyone making such a fuss about this? Why can't you say the same on the 12th January or 25th June? Why only at this year? People buy flowers and chocolate, go and have dinner and buy cards and stuff but why? I mean if you really truly love someone, you can buy them flowers on their Birthday or any other day of the year just to make them happy and tell them you love him/her, don't you? EVERY OTHER DAY OF THE YEAR! So please explain to me - if you celebrate Valentines Day - why this day? I truly don't get it... It is a myst...

Writing - Plan, Structure, Recipe

Image
“You can always edit a bad page. You can't edit a blank page.” ― Jodi Picoult While writing I had the idea of creating a blog post about this exact theme. You know I think some people might ask themselves how to write best. I did too when I started a few years ago... Was there a recipe? A plan? A structure? For some, maybe. For me there really isn't. I just do it.  Most of the time I truly say "I write now", it doesn't fully work. Then there are those moment's when you can't save yourself from ideas and scenes that pop into your head.  Where I always have ideas is, when I take a long hot shower or bath and think about my stories or possible scenes that could happen with some characters. Most of my Sherlock fanfiction happend like this to be honest. And they are rather good - yes I know I haven't published something yet but oh well... What I wanted to say is, that you have to do it after your own concept. There's no book titled ...

[book-review] Robert Galbraith - The Cuckoo's Calling

Image
“Strike was used to playing archaeologist among the ruins of people’s traumatised memories;” ― Robert Galbraith, The Cuckoo's Calling Many of you may have heard of this book/ series by now. The story of owning/reading this book is kinda funny in some ways... I had ordered The Cuckoo's Calling ages ago, a few weeks after it got published. Mostly because of the story, I didn't even knew by the time that actually Robert Galbraith was a synonym for J.K.Rowling. So I ordered it and put it in my shelf. I was very bad at reading all this stuf in English. I was slow and had to look up so many words so I put it away every time I wanted to start it again and forgot it somehow. I moved and put it - once more - in my shelf. By the time I was addicted to English. I only read and watched English things and I got quite good at the language, at least way better than all those years ago with my school Englisch. Anyway... Then I heard - via Twitter - that there would be a TV Show...

[review] The Greatest Showman

Image
Went to the cinema to see this with a friend a week back. I had heard the soundtrack before but couldn't get much out of it, I didn't really know what this movie was about but I heard such good reviews I had to see it. Well anyway it was awesome! [CAUTION: spoilers ahead!] So I loved all the songs but obviously I had a few favorite scenes / songs. I loved the beginning when The Greatest Show is presented and you see all the success before you just realise it's just a young boy dreaming for now...  And of course where Barnum and Charity visit this old house. It was fantastic as beginning, seeing him still dreaming and she supporting him. I was very happy to see, that he finally had THE idea for starting a business and even tho he cheated on the bank, he got successful. My first "love it" moment was the song Come Alive. Fantastic text, beautiful scene... Seeing him trying to please high society hurt me somehow... He tried so hard to be accepted by the ...

Simple Things

You know, it's not only the big things that count and make me happy these days. It's more like the simple things in life. I always have been very calm but since I moved out, I got even calmer. I haven't been out to party for ages and I don't want to to be honest. Yes sometimes the feeling is there and I plan something but it never happens because then I think, why do it? I can't drink because I've to drive, it's expensive and loud and when you're out alone, guys are being rude and insistent so I'd rather stay home curled up with a good book or watching Netflix. I love "big things" to happen tho, don't get me wrong but since I can't afford most of it anyway it's small stuff I buy/ do and I'm happy too. Also a tip of my old therapist. Yes I had one a few months after I quit Uni. It really did help to make me fell better. By the time it was hard to get out of bed and do anything at all because I felt like a complete failur...

Sundays

“The city takes a breath on Sunday. Of all that’s lost with the pursuit of what’s next, I hope we don’t lose that…”  ―  Hawksley Workman ,  Hawksley Burns for Isadora Sonntag. Domenico. Dimanche. Domingo. Sunday... Always loved those to be honest. It's like an official holiday. You don't have to work, no shops are open, you can go and have dinner tho and the world seems calm and a bit asleep. Sunday is my day. The day I usually do nothing except the things I love. (Well except I've a huge and important test in school but that's a different story.) Sometimes I'm at my parents and my mum and I cook together. But when I'm alone it's mostly lazy. But there are some things I always do on a Sunday. Things that I enjoy and that got a bit of a ritual like making myself a nice cup of tea in the morning. Wandering from my bed to my comfortable sofa to enjoy my cuppa and read or write or watch a show/movie. Sometimes I also enjoy a long hot shower or a nice ...

1st post!

Hello everybody! I don't really know how to beginn... All you need to know is in my bio but well... I'm a 25 year old girl from Germany. I'm working as a freight forwarder in a quite big European company and I really do love my job. I'm still in training but just until April, then we'll have our final tests. Anyway... I love books, my car, archery, writing, taking pictures and all things "England". I'm addicted to this country and truly fell in love when I visited it once in 2009. I miss it and hope, I'll be back soon. I'm pretty active on Twitter and I have found some amazing people there I can call friends. One also has a blog here, please follow her if you're interested. You can find her blog  here . The idea of a blog existed years ago and that was the reason I started a Tumblr blog. I kinda used it for fandom things and not too much for personal ones so I decided to start this one. I'm not very strict with posting stuff s...
